Our thoughts and prayers go out to Blake Shelton and his family for their tragic loss

It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Joe Bonsall, the beloved member of the iconic country and gospel group, The Oak Ridge Boys. For over five decades, Bonsall’s rich, unmistakable voice and infectious enthusiasm captivated audiences worldwide, solidifying the band’s status as one of the most enduring and celebrated acts in the history of country music.

Joining The Oak Ridge Boys in 1973, Bonsall quickly became an integral part of the group’s signature sound, lending his powerful baritone to hit after hit, from the chart-topping “Elvira” to the soulful “Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight.” His unwavering dedication and passion for the band were evident in every performance, as he seamlessly blended his vocals with those of his bandmates, William Lee Golden, Richard Sterban, and Duane Allen.

Beyond his musical prowess, Bonsall was known for his warm, affable personality and genuine love for his fans. He often spoke of the joy he found in connecting with audiences, whether on stage or through his writing, which included 11 published books, the most recent being his memoir, “I See Myself.”

In January 2024, Bonsall’s family revealed that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Despite the devastating prognosis, Bonsall remained steadfast, determined to continue performing with The Oak Ridge Boys for as long as he could. Sadly, the ravages of the disease proved too much, and Bonsall passed away on July 19, 2024, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of his loyal fans and his bandmates.

In the wake of Bonsall’s passing, fellow country superstar Blake Shelton took to social media to pay tribute to his friend, sharing a poignant message that captured the essence of Bonsall’s spirit. “I’ve NEVER seen Joe when he wasn’t smiling and completely full of life,” Shelton wrote, highlighting the infectious joy and passion that Bonsall brought to the stage.

As The Oak Ridge Boys continue their “American Made: The Farewell” tour, they do so with heavy hearts, knowing that Bonsall’s presence will be sorely missed. However, they have vowed to honor his memory by delivering performances that capture the spirit and energy that Bonsall embodied, ensuring that his legacy lives on through the music that he loved so dearly.

The passing of Joe Bonsall is a profound loss for the country music community and all those whose lives were touched by his music. Yet, as we bid farewell to this iconic figure, we are reminded of the enduring power of his artistry and the indelible mark he has left on the hearts of his fans. The Oak Ridge Boys will carry on, with Bonsall’s memory guiding them, as they continue to inspire and entertain audiences for years to come.
